BLOCKS & BUILDING | Toddler Weekly Activity Guide

Why not share this post!

Blocks & Building is such a fun and EASY Toddler activity theme to set up. This weekly toddler activity guide with the Blocks & Building theme is always popular and requires very little extra resources - in fact I'm pretty sure you'll have most of these at home already!

Each day we have a book to read (or a read aloud to watch if you don't have a copy, a song or dance to enjoy and 2-3 themed activities.

We would love you to join us in our Weekly Themed Facebook Group to share your car & truck themed activities and also to share your pics over on Instagram (follow @myboredtoddler and use #myboredtoddler so we can share our favorites!).

Sensory Play - Scooping Blocks Water Play

If you love a simple activity then this scooping blocks activity is a winner! It's so easy to set up but so much fun.

Fill up a large plastic container (I use an under the bed storage container) or sensory bin with water.

Add blocks (any that can go in water) - we used Duplo

Use a strainer (I used one like this but any kind will work).

I love to let the children play freely for a while, but you can always start to ask questions such as:

  • Can you scoop up a RED block?
  • Can you find two green blocks?
  • What color is that block?

Talking and asking questions during play encourages language learning - and they just think they're playing!

Building Challenge

Time to get out the building blocks. Any kind will do. Today's challenge is 'How tall can you make it!' Challenge your toddler to make a tall tower, or a tall house or a tall ship - whatever they are interested in.

If you are choosing blocks to buy I always recommend a set of these wooden blocks from Melissa & Doug. These will last years and your kids will still want to play with them.

Song/Dance: Build It Up

Get out the blocks and count along with this fun building/counting nursery rhyme.

Craft - Block Stamping

Dip blocks in paint to make fun patterns.

Duplo and Lego style blocks make great prints.

Wooden blocks are great for printing different shapes.

I use washable paints like THESE for this activity.

Song/Dance: London Bridge is Falling Down

Sensory Play - Foil Wrapped Blocks

Wrap blocks in foil and have your toddler unwrap them - this uses fine motor skills and is a sensory play activity too.

Blocks Game: Which one is missing?

Line up different blocks, let your toddler look, then remove one. Can they guess which is missing? Keep this one simple to encourage success. If they find it easy, add another block to the challenge!

Get Moving - 3 Little Pigs Yoga

Let's stay with the 3 Little Pigs theme today and relax and move with some kid friendly yoga.

Blocks & Building- Day 4

Sensory Play - Shaving Cream Blocks!

Another simple one - fill up a container wih shaving creme/whipped cream, add blocks and let them play!

Sensory & Fine Motor Play - Playdough & Blocks

This is another simple activity I got from Twin Mum Refreshed.

Get out the playdough and put out the blocks and see what happens! Will they stamp patterns into the playdough? Will they use the playdough to 'glue' the blocks together? Let them explore.

Building Challenge - Can you build using only the RED blocks

You can obviously change out the color, but by challenging them to do this there is lots of learning happening - sorting, color recognition etc. And it's fun too!
