Gingerbread Oobleck Messy Play for Christmas

Today I found myself with two kids at home unexpectedly and some urgent work that I needed to get done. With Christmas just around the corner, I quickly set up this Gingerbread Oobleck. Our regular oobleck and our dinosaur mud oobleck were both such hits and I happened to have everything I needed in the cupboard.

You'll see from the photos that I used a gingerbread family set of cookie cutters - this is only because I picked up a set last week planning on using them to make real gingerbread cookies. Use whatever cookies you have on hand but if you want a family set you can get one HERE from Amazon.  For some reason the kids added a dog to ours too - I'll put that down to child led play!

Of course we then had to read a book to go with our activity and what better book than The Gingerbread Man. This touch and feel version of the classic book is perfect for babies and toddlers. You can get this one HERE.

Let's get started making our Gingerbread Oobleck!

What you need to make Gingerbread Oobleck

Gingerbread Oobleck - what you need

How to make your Gingerbread Oobleck

  1. Add your corn flour to the container
Gingerbread Oobleck - adding the corn flour or corn starch
  2. Add your ground ginger and mix them together

  3. Slowly add your water - less water makes for a more 'gloopy' oobleck - more water makes it more runny. Add enough water to get to your desired consistency.
  4. Gingerbread Oobleck - adding the water and mixing
  5. Add in your gingerbread cookie cutters

  6. Let them play! We started by standing them all and then some pretend play took over! We also got our hands quite messy feeling the oobleck and watching it go from runny to hard. We later used the spoon to mix and and added a few containers so we could do some messy pouring too!
